For those of you wanting to see Mark Wahlberg as a superhero, your wish is finally being granted. No, he’s not joining the ranks of the Marvel or DC Cinematic Universes, but he will become bionic in The Six Billion Dollar Man. The film will be based on the popular 1970’s television series, The Six Million Dollar Man that starred Lee Majors as a former astronaut & test pilot who is injured in a plane crash and is fitted with high-tech bionic limbs and eye that give him super-powered abilities. He becomes a secret agent for the fictional government agency, the Office of Scientific Intelligence or OSI. The title references the cost of his enhancements that, apparently, have gone from 6 million to 6 billion dollars thanks to inflation. Mark Wahlberg will reunite with his Lone Survivor director Peter Berg on the adaptation with production scheduled to begin later next year for a 2016 release. With a built in fan base and superhero movies at their peak right now, the move seems like a no-brainer and could potentially be the start of a new franchise with spinoff potential. The original series spawned the equally popular The Bionic Woman starring Lindsay Wagner as a tennis pro saved by bionic enhancements who joins the OSI. Though no Bionic Woman movie is currently in the works, with studios scrambling to find female driven superhero movies, expect one to happen if The Six Billion Dollar Man turns out to be a hit. No writer has been attached to the project yet, but it’s planned 2016 release will put it 4 years ahead of Warner Brother’s planned Cyborg movie, based on their DC character who will appear in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also in 2016. As for Wahlberg, it was recently announced that he would be reuniting with Will Ferrell next month to shoot the comedy Daddy’s Home and will follow that up with Deepwater Horizon, about the 2010 oil spill, the worst in U.S. history. He will next be seen in The Gambler which hits theaters on December 19th. We’ll have to wait and see if Wahlberg can fill Lee Majors’ bionic shoes, but to find out which 7 actors almost landed some other famous roles, go ahead and click here. But first, are you excited to see The Six Billion Dollar Man on the big screen and is Mark Wahlberg the best actor to take on the role of the bionic hero?
